Finding Calm After School

For two school years and two months of of school, every day between 3:30 and 5 o'clock (dinner time) has been stressful and tiring.

I need to spend those ninety minutes between the bus stop and the table preparing the meal AND with my children.

But yesterday I had it right. It was a first.

Left to right: Little Sister coloring with water, Brother practicing his first name on a dry erase board, Big Sister working on homework. In the front of the counter are my preparations for broccoli cheddar soup. (Remember, I don't shred cheese.)

Even if I don't get it right again, I'm grateful for one day. One afternoon. Of just right.

(And once again I want to voice how amazing my homeschool friends are. Really!)

How do you manage dinner preparations and homework time?

  1. I try to do as much dinner prep in advance (or to be honest we eat really simple meals a lot on weeknights!) so I can mainly focus on homework with the kids. As they're getting older (10 & 8) they're getting more independent so it's a bit easier. So there's hope :) I think you've hit the nail on the head with having your youngest working on simple sit-down tasks at the same time so they're not interrupting when you're helping with homework. Hope things continue to work well for you! And I hear ya on the homeschooling... I couldn't do it!

  2. After school up until after dinner is definitely my hardest time of day too. Homework, practices, dinner, "sign my note", and so much more! So true.
