Chocolate Covered Pretzels

I had no idea that making chocolate covered pretzels was so easy and delicious.  A couple of friends have told me how easy they are to make, so this year I had it in my mind to finally make them. Chocolate pretzels provide the perfect combination of sweet and salty.  This "recipe" is child-friendly and would be an enjoyable way to spend time together preparing for New Year's Eve.

Prior to making our chocolate covered pretzels I bought chocolate wafers in white and milk chocolate at a local store that sells in bulk, as well as sprinkles.  We prefer to support the local businesses, so we buy Herr's snacks, which are available nationwide. (I'm not paid to say that...just do it!)

Alternative to a Double-Boiler

My friend Lisa's suggested a homemade double-boiler which requires no boiling water.  I turned my griddle to low heat and placed flat-bottomed casserole dishes on it to make a homemade double boiler.  I found it to be easier than using the standard alternate method of two pans and boiling water. I would suggest beginning the melting process in the microwave. To do so, place chocolate in the casserole dish. Microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Microwave for another 30 seconds. Stir. And then use your DIY double boiler.
Substitute double-boiler
Chocolate Covered Pretzels
1. Melt chocolate in a double boiler.
2. Prepare a cookie sheet (with sides) with wax paper.   Place it near the double boiler or stove top.
3. Sprinkle the sprinkles on the wax paper, if using them.
4. Once the chocolate is completely melted, hold the pretzel in one hand and spoon chocolate on the bottom half of the pretzel.
5. To remove excess chocolate, turn wrist back and forth (like you are turning a doorknob).
6. Place on prepared wax paper.
7a. Sprinkle immediately.
7b. If drizzling with a contrasting chocolate color instead of sprinkles, place many pretzels close together on the cookie sheet and wax paper.  Use the spoon to drizzle plenty of additional chocolate, as desired.
8. Cool completely.   (Cover loosely with wax paper if cooling overnight.)
9. Store in a sealed container or bag to gift.

Additional Thoughts:
~ If you want round pretzels (instead of flat-bottomed) be sure to add plenty of sprinkles below where you are setting them on the wax paper.
~ I bagged them in groups of 6-10, depending on the family size, for gift-giving.  (I have some neighbors with rather large families (8-10).  While some families/individuals might get two or more each, others would only get one each.)
~ Broken pretzels?  No problem!  They still dip fabulously for a snack for the family (instead of gifting).
~ Don't turn up the heat. White chocolate is especially sensitive to heat and will brown.

I had forgotten how much I like creamy white chocolate.  What is your favorite type of chocolate?

  2. I love the alternate double boiler! I would've never thought of that! I also like the idea about sprinkling the sprinkles (ha!) out before you put the pretzels down. Great idea!

    I LOVE chocolate covered pretzels!

  3. I made some for Halloween. The boy grand ate the chocolate and sprinkles off and left the pretzels!
