Sweet Mercy, by Ann Tatlock

This past year I have read a number of books written by Ann Tatlock.  I'll Watch the Moon even made it to my list of favorite books of 2012.  I find Ann's writing to be be easy to read (and hard to put down-even on the Kindle), yet full of historical facts and well-written.  This is the first of Ann's books that was provided by the publisher for review purposes.

Having grown up in the seedy city of St. Paul, Eve knows the evils of alcohol and understands the need for prohibition.  When Eve witnesses a murder, her parents decide to leave the city and go to her uncle's lodge in Mercy, Ohio during the dark days of the Depression.

Eve finds rest and comfort working at the lodge until she comes face to face with the evils she thought had been left behind in the city.  Eve's self-righteous attitude begins to crumble as she begins to understand that right and wrong are not always as black and white as she has thought.

I was not the least bit surprised at how much I enjoyed Sweet Mercy.  Ann Tatlock has the gift of painting word pictures that leave me thinking.  As I was reading, I definitely wondered how I would have reacted in similar situations knowing that once someone you care about does the wrong, it is a bit harder to judge...or maybe because we are so disappointed in the person, our thoughts lead to judgment.  I related a bit too well to Eve and her self-righteous ways...

This is a good work of Christian fiction.  I liked that it was not only set in the Depression, but also that prohibition was the topic, along with judgment and mercy.  I must say that there were several parts of the book that I was able to predict, but I still enjoyed it.

Thank you, Bethany House Publishers, for providing this book for review purposes.  All opinions are my own.
