Multi-Tasking AND Quality Time

Little Sister was napping and Brother was playing with Legos.  Big Sister wanted time with her mom, and I wanted time with her!  We cuddled on my bed and I read a chapter of Misty of Chincoteague to her.  (This was the book we had been reading in the van while waiting for the school bus...)

After reading to her, I explained that I needed to fold laundry.  I asked if she would like to help me or if she would want to read to me.  She opted to read me the entire book of Fish, Not Fish, a great non-fiction book.  Obviously, I had a lot of laundry to fold, even if it only has a few chapters.

As she was reading, she would make comments, like "Interesting!" or she would ask me questions.  Sometimes she would stop to show me a photograph as she read me the caption.
Normally, I wouldn't attempt to laundry and quality time, but this time, I think it was effective.  It worked for both of us!  Big Sister felt special because our time together began with focused attention with cuddling as I read to her.  It transitioned with her reading to me while I worked.  Though I was folding laundry, I was attentive to what she was saying.

I must say, three loads of laundry folded quickly that day!

I'm grateful for the opportunity to be intentional with our summer!

  1. I totally get what your saying! I let my youngest blow soap bubbles into the empty side of the sink while I washed up the dinner dishes...it was so much fun for both of us.
