Taste of Home Cooking School Cookbook GIVEAWAY

Read to the end for the GIVEAWAY!
Since I lived with my bachelor father during my teens and even early twenties, I never really learned how to cook.  Though I could boil water for things such as boxed macaroni and cheese or spaghetti, I certainly didn't learn to cook from scratch as a young woman.  (I should explain that I do not cook only from scratch now.  Sometimes we have a "boxed" of frozen item with dinner.)

Shortly after we married in 2003, I began subscribing to Taste of Home magazine.  I enjoyed these tried-and-true recipes and the lovely photos in the magazine.  I tried new recipes occasionally, and sometimes my husband would even suggest that I make something...typically something drool-worthy from the cover that contained chocolate or peanut butter...or both.  (I subscribed to the magazine for several years, and even held onto the magazines right up until this year's major purge of STUFF.  Most of the recipes that I liked have either been written down or can be found on-line now, so I was comfortable saying goodbye to the beautiful stacks of magazines.)

Recently I was asked if I would be interested in reviewing the Taste of Home Cooking School Cookbook.  I didn't have to think twice before I said, "YES!" even though I am no longer really using cookbooks.  (I prefer to go on-line...)

The Taste of Home Cooking School Cookbook's subtitle is 400+ simple to spectacular recipes.  I would agree; they include plenty of simple, every dishes combined with much more complicated and special-occasion dishes.  Nearly 150 "how-to's" are sprinkled throughout the cookbook, too.  Included are quick tips for things like shredding meat, cook spaghetti (differently than me), and buying/handling ground beef.  I found these tips to be helpful and versatile.  Some of the how-to's are a bit more complicated and include color photos and step-by-step directions.  This is a beautiful cookbook to page through, and most would find recipes to enjoy.

You may snicker at my choice of recipe that I chose to try first, but it just sounded so tasty and simple.  I've also made my own version in the past.  It was nice to compare the results.
Hot Ham 'n' Cheese Sandwiches
from Taste of Home Cooking School Cookbook

2 T mayonnaise
2 kaiser rolls, split
1/4 c shredded cheddar cheese
4 slices bacon strips (I precooked mine.)
6 slices deli ham (1/2 ounce each)
1/4 c shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Spread mayonnaise over rolls.  Layer bottoms with cheddar cheese, bacon, ham, and mozzarella cheese.  Replace tops.

Wrap sandwiches in foil; place on an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake at 350° for 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted.

These sandwiches were tasty, indeed!  Unless we need to eat them in the car, next time I will just bake them in the oven with the tops off, for about 5-10 minutes, since I use precooked bacon.  It will be long enough to warm the meat and melt the cheese, without baking them for such a long time.  The bacon, ham, and two cheeses were a delicious combination.

I think this would be a great cookbook choice as a gift or to add to one's own collection!  Thank you, FSB Associates for providing The Taste of Home Cooking School Cookbook for me and one of my readers!!
