Jesus Calling is a newer adult devotional that seems to be getting a lot of attention. Tommy Nelson now have produced a children's version called Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions for Kids. Tama Fortner adapted it from the original Jesus Calling, written by Sarah Young. The same themes and verses are used in both versions. Be sure to read to the end for a giveaway! This book was provided by Tommy Nelson for giveaway purposes, but all opinions are my own.
Each daily devotion's goal is to develop an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through time with "Him" and His Word. The daily devotions are based on Scripture. The unique part is that it is written as though Jesus is speaking directly to the child. I think this is something that some may dislike, but as I was reading through various entries, it does seem well done and based on Scripture.
Prior to giving this to my 7 year old, we will have a discussion about how it is like Jesus is the author, though the words are not truly His, though based on verses in the Bible. We will also read the Introduction together which explains this a bit.
The Jesus Calling for Kids Deluxe edition has a rust-red imitation leather cover. From what I have seen I do like it. It provides dated devotions, so it makes a great Christmas gift. I'm sure my daughter will be eager to begin using it on January 1st. Each devotion begins with a Bible verse written out. After the few paragraphs for the devotion, 1-3 additional verse references are provided for the child to read on his or her own. I would really have liked to see at least one long passage included each day, but from what I have seen they are typically one verse in length, though sometimes a bit longer.

I try to set aside some time for the older kids to go read some scripture alone - also we do group reading most mornings. This would be great to get my kids excited to have their own study times!

I try to encourage reading the Bible and having devotionals to my family by setting the example myself. I have a soon to be 5 year old daughter and a 22 month old son. We haven't come across a devotional book that's on my daughters level and I think this one would be awesome.

ReplyDeleteWe are in the process of getting a new pastor at church. One has already been confirmed, and the other will be next year. I haven't been as diligent as I should be :(
ReplyDeleteRight now we are doing advent activities. There is Bible reading everyday. We try to keep up with our church's kids devotionals as well.

We spend time reading each evening & for a while we were having Rachel memorize Bible passages. Hopefully we can get back to that in January.
