Vacation at the In-Laws

Now that Little Sister travels well, we opted to spend a week in rural northeastern Pennsylvania where we grew up (an hour apart).  We stayed with my husband's parents and had a great vacation.  We were able to visit with all of the grandparents at least twice and just enjoy ourselves.
10 ways to have fun while on vacation at the in-laws. #frugal #vacation
Maybe you can do the same sort of relaxing and fun family activities on an almost staycation.  Here are a few ways we had fun on vacation while staying with my in-laws (who are pretty awesome).

Ride with the top down.
(Yes, my in-laws live on a dirt road.  Can you see my son's hand waving?)

Roll down hills.
Collect acorns.
And then squish them between rocks to make a squirrel trap (according to my children).
Haul rocks.
Attend 20th class reunion.
Actually, this was the day after when the four of us got together at a local park.
(I never realized how short we all were until this picture.)
These girls are still great, and I'm grateful for them!
Visit the community park.
The covered bridge is located at the park where I got together with the friends from high school.
The floor boards are beautifully engraved with names to honor community members, including Derek's grandparents.

"Ride" a motorcycle.
Watch the steamroller.
We could feel the house vibrate as it went by.
Workers grated and rolled the road the last day we were there.
Read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
Make Turkish Delight.
This was the rock-hard first version I made.
It was tasty, even if it took ten minutes to cut that first piece.
I tried a second time since it was the wrong consistency.  This time it didn't even gel.
Drive a tractor.
This was Brother's first time steering a real tractor on Great Grandpa's lap.
REALLY drive it.
He loved every minute of it.
Play with Lottie
Lottie is an adorable, wholesome doll who is perfect for little girls to play with...she even goes along for some outdoor adventures.  Find Lottie dolls here.  (Affiliate link.)  Big Sister has had her Lottie doll since June, and will be collecting more.
The best choice we made of the vacation was to...
Leave the 2 year old behind with Grandma and Grandpa to take the Big Kids to a water park.
We took the Big Kids to a water park in the Adirondacks of New York state.  We had a great time!

Obviously, we all had a great time at the home of my husband's parents.  I'm thankful for a great relationship with them.

What do you enjoy doing at your in-laws' home?  Do you like low-key vacations?

  1. Looks like you had a lovely time! And in the photo of you and your friends, it doesn't look like you're short--I thought you looked tall! I am fairly tall so I always think people in photos are tall, too, unless I see that they aren't because they are standing next to someone tall!

    1. Ha! I'm not even 5' 1". I was wearing my thick flip-flops. :)

  2. I bought Turkish Delight when we watched The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe because I didn't want to try and make it.

  3. Looks like you had so much. :) I've always wonder what Turkish Delight was after seeing that movie. It actually looks yummy, though it has a unappetizing name.
