Together on Tuesday #1 {About Me}

I am so glad you popped in for Together on Tuesdays. Today is the very first one, so it's time for a bit of an introduction.  We'd love for you to join us!  Just write a post or link to a past one introducing yourself, and then return to These Grace Filled Days or This Simple Home to link up!

Introductions are hard...especially if you are like me and are a, um, rather boring person.  Since Dorie and I are encouraging you to write more than just the standard introduction, I thought I would try to come up with ten things you may not know about me...You can read a couple of standard introductions of me here and here, if you wish.

1. I ♥ my birth date.  It's repetitive and contains some of my favorite numbers.  (This is a public website, you know, so this is not my actual birth date...but it is like this.)  8-9-89  Oh, my, I am not that young...by a lot.
2. I was an environmental educator.  When I didn't get a regular elementary teaching job right out of college, I moved to New England and taught middle school students in a camp environment with an organization called Nature's Classroom.  (I say "moved" but my permanent address remained with my father in PA since it was seasonal work.)  Teaching there made me a much better teacher and gave me a great foundation.  I also spent eight years teaching first and third graders...and a tad bit of junior high.
3. I'm not a dog person.  I had a couple of dogs (indoor/outdoor) growing up, but now that I am all grown up, I don't want a dog.  My husband feels the same way.  Three children keep us plenty busy...and they travel better.  (That may be up for debate!)  I suspect the drool is about the same...
4. I once asked to keep a small snake I found in the creek as a pet.  I was around 12 or 13, and I am pretty sure I didn't want it, but I wanted to see my the reaction of my dad's girlfriend.  When my oldest daughter was three, she KISSED a snake.  Yep.
5. My dad let me drive any of the classic cars he had licensed.  Most memorable were the 1973 Monte Carlo convertible (though very large), '72 Barracuda, and '69 AMC Javelin.  A few times I drove his 1936 Ford pick-up, but that was rare, and he was typically with me.  I knew I was rather privileged (even if I didn't enjoy the 1982 Lincoln so much...this was the mid-nineties) to drive such unique cars.
6. Our home is within a mile or so of at least five Amish farms.  I am friends with one woman, and friendly with two more.  I don't mind the manure smell...I know it comes with rural living!  We very much enjoy living in the country.  My husband and I both grew up in rural Pennsylvania.  We are still in PA, but about five hours from our families now.
7. When I was a small child living on the dairy farm, we had a "pet" deer for a couple months that had been abandoned by its mother.  (I only lived on the farm for about four years.)  I remember giving it graham crackers to eat.
8. I went spelunking with two friends.  Definitely an adventure and a special memory, especially since one of the friends died that same summer.
9. I do not drink coffee.  I used to say if I made it through college without acquiring the taste I would likely never drink it.  Now I consider the accomplishment being that I made it through Little Sis's first three months of screaming and lack of sleep...I can do anything without coffee!
10. Some gifts I have not.  Thankfully my gifted, athletic husband can look over the fact that I am not athletic. I can play "family-reunion-style" volleyball...that's about it.  I also can't carry a tune.  It's been noted that I sing the ABC's...off-tune.  Yep, former teacher, singing the ABC's "wrong" to my own children.  Don't worry though.  I get the alphabet order correct and sing L-M-N-O-P slowly!

Ready?  We would love to get to know you more!  Please link up below!

  1. Boy, you think you know someone then you read a post, lol. I didn't know you taught in New England! Jerry and I spent the first few years of our marriage living in New England. I so can't sing either. Hitting a note isn't gonna happen for me, unless by accident. How can you not drink coffee? I just don't understand :-)

  2. I had to look up what spelunking is. It sounds fun(and dangerous)! :)

That's awesome that you got to raise a baby deer! We have TONS around our house, but they don't get too close.

I agree with you on dogs! We have 4 in all(only 1 inside), and besides being watchdogs, they've worn out their welcome. My husband does NOT feel the same way. :P

It was fun getting to know you better.

  3. I am not at all athletic, either. My husband went spelunking once in college but I don't think I ever could!

I drank a lot of coffee in college, but lately it makes me too hot. I have to drink decaf now due to health issues, and I pretty much only drink it in the winter to keep warm and sometimes with dessert. I've never liked all the flavored coffees, so that has saved me a lot of money. :-)

Thanks for starting this series. I'm looking forward to it.

  4. I remember that baby deer! We have a picture of my Mom and I feeding. I think I was about 5. :)
    I learned quite a bit about you that I didn't know. :)

  5. I don't think you are very boring. :) I think you are very interesting!

I love that you had a pet deer! (And only wanted a snake to see your dad's girlfriend's reaction. ha!)

I've always liked the fact that I was born on Labor DAY itself. My birthday is always on a National Holiday/three-day weekend which is awesome. :)
